Abstract
Although it is possible to obtain sexual hybrids between Lycopersicon esculentum and L. peruvianum using embryo culture techniques (1), the yield of hybrids is often very low. This present study using protoplast fusion was undertaken to determine the extent to which somatic hybridisation could eliminate this difficulty. The nature of somatic hybridisation required a background of regeneration capability from protoplasts, and also the development of methods for the selection of somatic hybrid cells directly from the fusion products between wild types of both species. Methods are described for the basic steps towards the achievement of this objective.
