Abstract
Recent studies on temperate forage legumes indicate that plants can be regenerated from protoplast-derived callus of seven species from five genera, including Lotus corniculatus (birdsfoot trefoil)1, Medicago sativa (alfalfa, lucerne)2, 3, M. coerulea, M. glutinosa 4, Onobrychis viciifolia (sainfoin)5, Trifolium repens (white clover)5, 6, and Trigonella corniculata 7. Protoplasts from some other forage legumes will divide to form callus. Most of the varieties recommended for field cultivation are autotetraploids, with increase in ploidy in these plants generally being associated with increase in yield.
