Gerbergasse

Zusammenfassung

Die Gerbergasse ist neben der Freien Straße eine der wichtigsten Geschäftsstraßen. Hohe Häuser auf schmalen Parzellen, die nur für kleine Läden Platz boten, waren typisch für diese alte Gasse; teilweise bestehen sie noch heute. Einige alte Häuser mit prächtigen gotischen Fensterprofilen haben großen Neubauten weichen müssen. Gemütlich-kleinstädtisch muteten bei der «Chapellerie Falkner» die zwei Hüte und der Zweispitz an, die durch ihre zinnoberrote Farbe als Firmenschild auffielen. Und weiter wirkte die neobarocke Blendsäule am Restaurant «Stadthof» zur Linken für unser heutiges Empfinden recht eigenartig. (Abgebrochen 1938)

Abstract

The Gerbergasse and Freie Strasse are now the two main shopping streets of Basle. Tall narrow houses, with room only for small shops, were characteristic of the Gerbergasse, and some of these still exist. Some of the older buildings, with their characteristic windows, have given way to big modern blocks. There was something comfortably unsophisticated about the old Falkner shop sign consisting of three hats (one a cocked hat in scarlet), and the neobaroque pilaster of the Stadthof restaurant (in the foreground) was also rather striking. The houses in the picture were demolished in 1938.

Résumé

La ruelle des Tanneurs est, à côté de la rue Franche, une des artères les plus commerçantes de la ville. Des maisons tout en hauteur, ne laissant place qu’à une étroite boutique, lui donnaient son caractère. Nombre d’entre elles subsistent encore. Quelques vieux immeubles, aux très belles fenêtres gothiques, ont dû faire place à de grandes constructions modernes. Les deux chapeaux et le bicorne rouge cinabre, qui servaient d’enseigne à la chapellerie Falkner, conféraient à cet endroit un petit air provincial et désuet. De plus, la fausse colonne néobaroque du restaurant «Stadthof» faisait un effet assez insolite... (Démoli en 1938)
