Spalentor

Zusammenfassung

Es ist eines der schönsten mittelalterlichen Stadttore des ausgehenden 14. Jahrhunderts und dazu vollkommen erhalten. Der rechteckige Hauptturm mit dem Spitzhelm wird von zwei kräftigen Rundtürmen mit Zinnen flankiert. Die alte Torsperre mit Torflügeln, Fallgatter und Fallbalken aus wuchtigem unverwüstlichem Eichenholz ist noch vorhanden und funktionsfähig; das Vorwerk mit Konsolen von Jakob Sarbach verleiht dem Tor nach außen besonderes Gewicht. Über dem äußeren Toreingang thront auf einer Mondsichel eine Sandsteinmadonna mit Kind. Sie ist eine der schönsten Muttergottesstatuen unserer Gegend aus der Zeit um 1420; zwei Propheten, künstlerisch nicht von der gleichen Qualität, stehen seitlich von ihr. 1866 wurde die Stadtmauer niedergelegt und der Stadtgraben aufgeschüttet, so daß dieses Tor heute, seiner ursprünglichen Funktion weitgehend entfremdet, etwas verloren dasteht.

Abstract

The Spalentor is one of the finest mediaeval town gates of the later 14th century, and is in an excellent state of preservation. The rectangular main tower with the pointed roof is flanked by two round towers with crenellations. The old portcullis is still in working order. The outwork with consoles by Jakob Sarbach adds weight to its appearance. Above the entrance on the outside is a Madonna and Child in sandstone seated on a demilune; it dates from about 1420 and is one of the most beautiful in this region. The two prophets standing one on each side of the Virgin are artistically less remarkable. In 1866 the town wall was demolished and the ditch filled in, so that the gate seems rather forlorn, deprived of its function.

Le «Spalentor» est l’une des plus belles portes de ville que nous ait laissées le moyen âge, surtout en aussi parfait état. Le corps central rectangulaire, au toit pointu, est flanquéde deux puissantes tours rondes et crénelées. Le vieux système de fermeture de la porte avec ses vantaux, sa herse et son orgue en lourd bois de chêne indestructible, est toujours prêt à fonctionner. Les consoles de Jakob Sarbach donnent à la tour, vers l’extérieur, un aspect particulièrement imposant et belliqueux. Au-dessus de l’entrée, on peut admirer une statue en grès de la Vierge à l’Enfant, posée sur un croissant de lune, datant de 1420 environ; c’est la plus belle du genre de toute la région. Deux prophètes, d’une valeur artistique inégale, l’entourent. Les remparts de la ville furent abattus et les fossés comblés en 1866, de sorte que le «Spalentor», réduit au rang de simple témoin, paraît aujourd’hui un peu perdu au milieu du trafic urbain.
