Abstract

At Brookhaven, Λ’s are produced polarized in p-p interactions perpendicular to a horizontal production plane defined defined by prôton × Λ̂, with their spins pointing down roughly twice as often as up, for a 1 GeV/c transverse Λ momentum. Such a large effect must indicate a simplicity in the underlying dynamics of particle production, even at low transverse momentum. This paper discusses four BNL experiments in the context of experiments done at other energies and discusses our present (lack of) understanding of the origin of the effect.
