Zusammenfassung

Ein typischer Zeitungsartikel über Vincent van Gogh beginnt mit der Mitteilung an die Leser, daß es hundert und eine Diagnose zu Vincents Erkrankung gebe. Darauf folgt in der Regel — mehr oder weniger direkt gestellt — die Frage, wann man denn nun endlich der Sache auf die Spur kommen werde. Tatsächlich gibt es nicht mehr als ein Dutzend ernstzunehmender Vorschläge, aber unzählige Meinungen. Zu Anfang ging ich davon aus, daß alle einschlägigen Veröffentlichungen im Prinzip seriös seien, stellte aber fest, daß nur wenige die Diskussion wirklich voranbrachten. Unglücklicherweise war die Mehrzahl der Hypothesen recht vage und schlecht untermauert, doch fanden sie Eingang in die Literatur und werden bis auf den heutigen Tag ziemlich unkritisch zitiert.
