Zusammenfassung
Sind wir allein im Universum? Diese Frage stellt sich ganz automatisch, wenn man hinauf an den Sternenhimmel blickt. Und wirklich, warum sollte unter den Tausenden von Sternen nicht eine Sonne wie die unsre sein, umgeben von Planeten, auf denen zum Teil Wesen wie wir leben? Dies ist eine der Fragen, die sich die Menschen seit undenkbaren Zeiten über das Leben, den Tod und das Danach stellen, ohne jedoch mehr als darüber spekulieren zu können. Diese Fragen spiegeln das Bedürfnis wider, der Welt, in der wir leben, eine Ordnung zu geben, aber auch das Gerüst unseres Alltags in Frage zu stellen. Was wäre, wenn die Radioastronomen schließlich eine verständliche Botschaft vom Rande unserer Galaxis auffangen würden? Unser Weltbild wäre vollständig aus dem Gleichgewicht gebracht.
