Zusammenfassung
Die Auseinandersetzung der höheren Lebewesen (und damit auch die des Menschen) mit den Viren und anderen Mikroben ist mit Sicherheit nicht jüngeren Datums. Sie reicht sogar bis weit hinter den Punkt zurück, wo sich entwicklungsgeschichtlich der Mensch aus den Evolutionslinien seiner tierischen Vorfahren abzweigte. Ein Vermächtnis dieses uralten Kampfes ist das Abwehrzwecken dienende, komplex vernetzte und hochwirksame «Wunderwerk» des Immunsystems.
