Zusammenfassung
Fritz Laves (1906–1978) formuliert (1931a) folgendes Problem: Man teile die Ebene lückenlos (und ohne Überdeckungen) in endliche gleiche oder spiegelbildlich gleiche Polygone auf, wobei jedes Polygon von der Gesamtheit der umgebenden Polygone in gleicher oder in spiegelbildlich gleicher Weise umgeben ist. Grünbaum und Shephard (1986, S. 199) behandeln das Problem abschließend, sie schreiben:
«The first explicit reference to what we call combinatorially equivalent tilings occurs in Laves (1931 b); similar ideas underlie Heesch (1932,1933 a, b) and Nowacki (1935)« (siehe Bildtafel II aus Heesch [1968/1986]).
