Zusammenfassung
Es erfordert nicht viel Vorstellungskraft wahrzunehmen, daß die menschliche Spezies inzwischen Veränderungen auf der Erde bewirkt, die geologische Ausmaße angenommen haben. Wir bewegen buchstäblich Berge, um uns die Mineralien der Erde anzueignen; wir leiten Flüsse um, um Städte in der Wüste zu bauen; wir brennen Wälder ab, um Platz für Ackerbau und Vieh zu schaffen; und wir verändern die Zusammensetzung der Atmosphäre, indem wir sie als Auffangbecken für unsere Abfälle und Abgase mißbrauchen. Durch die Hand des Menschen erfährt die Erde einen tiefgreifenden Wandlungsprozeß — mit Auswirkungen, die nur schwer erfaßt werden können.
