Zusammenfassung
Im Sommer 1969 löste Neil Armstrong das Mondlandegerät Eagle vorsichtig von der Apollo 11 und tat seinen berühmten «großen Schritt für die Menschheit». Auf der Erde tat im selben Sommer ein Forscherteam von der Harvard Medical School einen kleineren Schritt, der aber weitaus längerfristige Folgen hatte: Sie isolierten das erste Einzelgen in chemischer Reinform. Es war eine größere technische Leistung. Sie stützte sich auf biochemische Methoden, für die drei andere Amerikaner 1969 den Nobelpreis erhielten. «Dies ist eine sehr bedeutsame Leistung», versicherte ein führender Genetiker der New York Times gegenüber, als die erfolgreiche Isolierung im November verkündet wurde.1
«Die Verbesserung der gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen wird schlechte Erbanlagen nicht ausgleichen... Die einzige Möglichkeit, ein Land geistig und körperlich gesund zu halten, besteht in der Sicherstellung, daß jede neue Generation vorwiegend von den tauglicheren Mitgliedern der Vorgeneration abstammt.»
