Summary
The relations are summarized between potential, current and derived data, as obtained by polarographically derived technics, and (a) reversibility of electron-transfer processes and the various factors producing irreversibility in such processes, and (b) the study of homogeneous solution kinetics, the kinetics of reactions occurring near the electrode whose equilibria are perturbed by electrolytic processes, and heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics.
The application of electrochemical methods and theories to the investigation and resolution of problems in the kinetics of biochemical reactions is illustrated by case histories involving biologically important chemical species and phenomena: (a) measurement by cyclic voltammetry of the dimerization and protonation rates of the free radical anion produced on reduction of pyrimidine; (b) determination of association, conformation and orientation in nucleosides and nucleotides by D.M.E. polarography; (c) relation of electrode kinetics to structure and to rates of homogeneous redox reactions as seen in the correlations of standard heterogeneous rate constants with the nature of the ligands complexing the Fe(III)-Fe(II) couple and with substitution on the quinone moiety; (d) kinetic and adsorption data on purine as obtained by alternating current polarography (total, phase-selective and second-harmonic).
