Summary
An excitable biological membrane is described as a lattice of protomers. Each protomer can be in one of two possible conformational states closed and open. These conformations have different affinity for Na+, K+ and Ca2+ ions. The equilibrium between the closed and open states shifts under the influence of Ca2+ adsorption. The number of open protomers which is proportional, to the membrane conductance, can be calculated from the isotherm of Ca2+ adsorbtion in the system of interacting protomers. Dynamic equations for the number of protomers are of the relaxational type. On this basis all electrical characteristics of the excitable membrane have been calculated.
