Abstract

Isothiocyanates (ITC) and their synthetic producers studied in our laboratories during the last ten years according to their biological effects can be divided into six groups (Table 1). In the first large group, natural isothiocyanates and more or less related synthetic analogues are included. All these substances are of the alkyl- or arylalkyl-type. Mononuclear aromatic isothiocyanates, which form the second group are represented by more than 60 mono-, di- or polysubstituted phenylisothiocyanates. Group 3 is represented by polynuclear non-condensed aromatic isothiocyanates. The fourth and fifth groups are formed by polynuclear condensed aromatic and various heterocyclic isothiocyanates. Group 6 represents a large group of mustard oil formers.
