Abstract

The topics of moderate- and long-range transport of air pollutants and the removal of these pollutants from the atmosphere are discussed within the context of the cycling of contaminants through the ecosphere. Experimental results pertinent to three aspects of these problems are presented. Evidence is shown of the transport of sulphur dioxide over Lake Ontario for distances of up to 100 km; residence times of several hours for particulates over water are determined, and from measurements of vertical gradients of sulphur dioxide over water, which are often found to be ± 2 pphmv over 6 m, estimates of turbulent fluxes to and from the surface are made. A discussion follows which outlines approaches to further research in these areas.
