Summary

Design for safety of slender reinforced concrete columns is largely influenced by the magnitude and nature of the applied loads. By comparison, the effect of the forces resulting from the restraint of the structure is of lesser importance. Because of the twofold nonlinearity in the relationship between the axial load and the column stiffness on the one hand and the axial load and the column displacement on the other, “exact” determination of the failure load is complex and time consuming. Therefore, in practical applications approximate solutions have to be used.
