Abstract
In the theory of fixed points and various applied problems an important role is played by the closely related notions of degree of a map, rotation of a vector field, and fixed-point index of an operator. We shall use the terminology connected with the last of these three notions; moreover, whenever there is no danger of confusion, we shall simply speak about the “index” of the operator in question instead of its “fixed-point index”.
