Summary
Neuropeptide genes appear to be expressed not only in nervous tissues but also in several peripheral organs including the gonads. For two examples of low level gonadal gene expression, proopiomelanocortin and vasopressin, cDNA sequence analysis shows that the positive hybridization signals obtained in blot assays are a manifestation of spurious, non-functional gene transcripts. For the high level expression of the oxytocin gene in the bovine corpus luteum, gene transcripts are fully functional leading to oxytocin peptide production both in vivo and in vitro. In the latter case peptide production appears to be under the influence of both insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and prostaglandins.
