Zusammenfassung

Im Sommer 1992 brannten die Wälder in Griechenland — vielleicht heftiger als jemals zuvor. Im August, auf dem Höhepunkt der Sommerhitze, bei Durchschnittstemperaturen von 40°C, loderten gleichzeitig 46 Feuersbrünste, von denen viele absichtlich gelegt worden waren, um Platz für Ackerland zu schaffen. Im nordöstlichen Teil des Landes hielt eine Gemeinde eine 24-Stunden-Wache, um ihre letzten Flecken jungfräulichen Urwalds, das Dadia-Soufli-Forstreservat, zu schützen.

Unsere Wurzeln stecken tief in dem Land, in dem wir leben. Wir lieben unser Land sehr, denn wir sind hier geboren. Die Erde birgt die Knochen von Tausenden unserer Vorfahren. Jeder von uns wurde in diesem Land geschaffen, und es ist unsere Pflicht, uns sorgfältig darum zu kümmern, denn aus diesem Land werden zukünftige Generationen unserer Völker hervorgehen. Wir behandeln das Land mit großem Respekt, denn die Erde ist ein sehr heiliger Platz.
