Zusammenfassung
Als Chou En Lai eines Tages gefragt wurde, was denn seiner Ansicht nach die weltgeschichtliche Wirkung der Französischen Revolution sei, meinte er: «Das läßt sich noch nicht sagen. Es ist noch zu früh.» Die UNCED-Konferenz gehört wohl nicht in dieselbe Klasse historischer Ereignisse wie die Französische Revolution, auch wenn viele gehofft hatten, sie werde zu einem wichtigen geschichtlichen Wendepunkt. Aber auch in ihrem Fall ist der Zeitpunkt noch nicht gekommen, ihre Wirkung endgültig zu bewerten. Aber immerhin: Es gab sie, und sie ist beendet; wir können nun beginnen, ihre Fäden zu entwirren, ohne die Befürchtung, ihr Ergebnis vorwegzunehmen.
