Die einfachste aromatische Verbindung ist das Benzol. Der Grundkörper von aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen ist also der Benzolring. Jedes der sechs Wasserstoffatome kann z. B. durch einen Alkylrest ersetzt werden.
