D. Epstein: I wish to thank the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde for this invitation. I am the only one at this round-table who does not come from a German-speaking country and I hope that you will forgive me if I speak in my mother tongue, English.

Es hat eine Zeit gegeben, wo ein, Großer, Schiller, sagen konnte: der Mensch ist nur dann ganz Mensch, wenn er spielt. Das klingt in so ernsten und notvollen Zeiten wie die unsere frivol, und doch ist mir sicher, daß das heilige und befreiende Spiel, das man Kunst nennt, immer dem Menschen unentbehrlich sein wird, damit er sich recht als Mensch fühlt.
