Abstract

Thyroid hormones have been known to increase renal plasma flow (RPF), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and filtered Na+-load. It was proposed that the increase in (Na+ + K+)-Adenosine Triphosphatase activity might have been an adaptive response to an increase in filtered Na+-load. The present study was undertaken to test this hypothesis. The results indicate that the effect of triiodothyronine (T3) on the (Na+ + K+)-Adenosine Triphosphatase activity precedes its effect on the RPF, GFR, and filtered Na+-load. T3 probably has a direct effect on the de novo synthesis of this enzyme in the rat kidney cortex.
