Eine Fläche ϕ wird gewöhnlich vorgegeben entweder implizite durch eine Gleichung F (x, y, z) = 0 oder, indem etwa z als Funktion von x, y gegeben wird: z = f (x, y) oder allgemeiner, indem x, y und z als Funktionen von zwei Parametern, etwa u, v, den sogenannten Koordinaten auf der Fläche, ausgedrückt werden.
