Abstract
The normal behavioural repertoire of the fowl is known from several investigations. Observations have been carried out on the ancestor of the domestic fowl, the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus spadiceus) both in nature and in captivity, and the domestic fowl has been studied under free-range conditions. In some cases feral fowls have been studied. On the basis of these and other investigations this paper goes through the part of the normal behaviour which may throw some light on problems related to intensive egg production with special reference to the well-being of the hen in traditional battery cages.
