Zusammenfassung

According to Simmons (1964) dusting or dustbathing is a behaviour by which “dust” (fine dry earth, sand etc.) is driven into the plumage and later expelled. It is not nearly so widespread among bird species as true bathing in water. However, all the species that do not bathe in water dust themselves, and this suggests that the function of bathing in water and dusting may be similar. Some birds like the house sparrow both dust and bathe in water. In the gallinaceous birds, including the domestic hen and its ancestor, the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus var.spadiceus) only dusting occurs.
