Ein Ideal I eines Ringes R heißt Hauptideal, falls es ein a ∈ R gibt mit I = aR. Der nächste Satz besagt unter anderem, daß jedes Ideal in Z ein Hauptideal ist. Ringe mit dieser Eigenschaft nennen wir Hauptideairinge.
