Abstract

Figure 57 shows a photograph of part of the San Andreas fault in California — one of the best investigated fault zones in the world. The displacements are in this case mainly horizontal, in which the eastern side (towards. the mainland of the USA) is moving towards the south in relation to the western side (towards the Pacific Ocean).
