Zusammenfassung
Das Interesse an Untersuchungen zur Life-history-Evolution und Naturgeschichte von Echsen erwachte schon in den 30er und 40er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts (z.B. Fitch 1935; Kramer 1946). Jedoch setzte ein starker Aufschwung erst in den 60er Jahren mit zwei Monographien über nordamerikanische Leguane (Iguanidae) ein, die eine von Blair (1960) über Sceloporus olivaceus, die andere von Tinkle (1967) über Uta stansburiana. Beide Studien hatten das Ziel, möglichst viele Parameter der Populationsdynamik und Life-histories dieser Echsen zu quantifizieren. Beide Autoren teilten die Ansicht, daß wichtige Erkenntnisse nur durch sehr detaillierte Untersuchungen eines jeden Aspektes der Populationsökologie gewonnen werden können. Diese beiden Monographien stimulierten eine rasch wachsende Zahl an weiteren Untersuchungen zur Populationsökologie von Echsen. Wegen der hohen Populations-dichten vieler Arten und der relativen Leichtigkeit, mit der viele Echsenpopulationen studiert werden können (größere Anzahlen können häufig leicht gefangen und individuell markiert werden), wurden sie bald zu Modellorganismen für die ökologische Evolutionsforschung.
