Es ability to function as high-strength metal bonding agents, could be “formulated” [47] so as to answer a wide range of specialised requirements.

Abstract

From the very outset CIBA Limited tested numerous other new epoxy resins made with various polyphenols, but it became apparent that the original ethoxyline or epoxy resins — ethylene oxide derivatives of a diphenol, and particularly of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, or bisphenol A — were the practical basis of the new function. This is still true today. The most suitable hardeners were identified without much difficulty by subjecting various chemical substances to simple tests. It proved a relatively simple matter to find the appropriate hardening agent for any given application and to establish the ideal operating conditions — quantity, curing temperature, curing time, etc. Similarly it was not difficult to select appropriate additives such as fillers, colorants, resins, and plasticisers from the range already available for the modification of other plastics. In this manner the new material, the epoxy resins with their newly recognised ability to function as high-strength metal bonding agents, could be “formulated” [47] so as to answer a wide range of specialised requirements.
