Abstract
Recent concerns about the cardiovascular safety of the coxibs have heightened concerns about the risks of myocardial infarction and other cardiac conditions with all NSAIDs. The relative cardiovascular risks of ibuprofen are compared with those of the coxibs and NSAIDs in evidence from epidemiological and clinical trial studies at prescription and OTC dosages. Factors affecting the risks of serious CV reactions including presence of rheumatic disease, drug interactions of ibuprofen with anti-hypertensives, diuretics and other agents are considered. For ibuprofen the possibility that the drug may interfere with the anti-platelet actions of low-dose aspirin is reviewed and suggestions made for reducing this reaction.
