Abstract

The clinical efficacy of ibuprofen has been shown in a wide variety of painful and inflammatory states, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA) and other musculo-skeletal conditions. Its effects at prescription level dosage (1,800–2,400 mg/day) have been shown in a large number of clinical trials. Generally it has comparable effects in relief of pain and joint symptoms to other NSAIDs, including the newer COX-2-selective agents (coxibs). The differences in effects with longer half-life drugs may relate to dose and duration of drug use. In the dental pain, throat pain, headache and fever clinical models and conditions, ibuprofen at OTC doses (<1,200 mg/day) is generally of comparable efficacy to other NSAIDs and the same or slightly more effective than paracetamol OTC.
