Abstract
Central in this chapter are Theorems 8.27 and 8.39 on controlled extension and controlled contraction. Given a family of cubes, they make it possible to construct a new one with fine properties, which is controlled in a sense by the initial family. In the next chapter, these results will be used for construction of near-minimizers for various couples involving a space of smooth functions.
