Abstract
The present study has its origin in problems of optimal resource allocation, especially those related to the possibilities of a price mechanism. While for some purposes Pareto-optimality might be the more relevant concept, we have confined ourselves here to the case where by " optimal" is meant " efficient" resource allocation.
