Metrische Räume sind Mengen, auf denen eine Abstandsfunktion definiert ist. In der Ebene kannman sich z.B. auf freiem Feld die „Luftlinie“ als Abstandsfunktion denken; in einer Stadt dagegen würde man eine andere Abstandsfunktion wählen.
