Abstract

Lactarius glaucescens is a fascinating fungus that was first described in Morocco, in the Mamora forest, under the canopy of cork oaks (Quercus suber). This discovery has opened a new window on the mycological diversity of this region, while highlighting the importance of Mediterranean forest ecosystems for fungal biodiversity.

Lactarius glaucescens is a species belonging to the Russulaceae family, characterized by often colorful sporophores and a latex, the milky liquid seen when the flesh of the fungus is broken. The name “glaucescens” refers to the mushroom's general color, which tends towards grey-blue or green-grey, giving an indication of its appearance.

The discovery of Lactarius glaucescens in Morocco is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it broadens our understanding of the geographical distribution of this fungus, which until now has been known mainly from Europe. Secondly, it underlines the importance of conserving the Mamora’s forest ecosystems, which are home to a rich diversity of fungi and other forms of life. Finally, this discovery highlights the crucial role of researchers and mycology enthusiasts in exploring and documenting fungal biodiversity, thus contributing to our knowledge of ecosystems and the preservation of these precious natural habitats.
