Abstract

In this book, we define mental health as more than the absence of mental illness. There is a widespread focus on mental illness as a problem in individuals and society; this is a deficit perspective. Mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness but the presence of characteristics (symptoms) that reflect a positive state of being (the presence of life satisfaction, general well-being, resilience, positive relationships, and a sense of purpose). We argue that an equally, if not more, important goal of reducing mental illness is to enhance mental wellness in the population in the digital age.
