Abstract

Despite a plethora of methods that provide further information on spermatozoa quality and functions, only a few sperm function tests are routinely used in the andrology laboratory. Numerous of these tests for diagnosing fertility disorders examine only single isolated aspects of spermatozoa and do not necessarily reflect the situation in vivo. Moreover, some sperm function tests are not feasible due to technical or ethical limitations and more experimental tests cannot be performed in a routine andrology laboratory due to lack of technical expertise. However, tests for analysis of sperm DNA quality are problematic because they are invasive and destroy the analyzed sperm, making them unavailable for use, for example in ICSI.
