Abstract

A problem is two-dimensional if the field quantities such as stress and displacement depend on only two coördinates (xy) and the boundary conditions are imposed on a line \(f(x,y)\!=\!0\) in the xy-plane.

Notes

  1. 1.

The Mechanics of Materials solution for axial force and pure bending is in fact exact in the sense of the Theory of Elasticity, since the stresses clearly satisfy the equilibrium equations (2.4) and the resulting strains are linear functions of xy and hence satisfy the compatibility equations (2.7) identically.

  2. 2.

    See Chapter 16.
