Abstract
Before beginning a procedure in interventional radiology, it is important to consider the imaging modality and instruments needed to complete the task. The ability to use imaging to perform a diagnostic or therapeutic task is paramount in interventional radiology, improving patient safety and procedure efficacy. Each imaging modality offers a variety of benefits and costs, and these must be weighed against the procedure, the patient, and the environment to select the best approach. Once a modality of imaging has been chosen, to perform a procedure, the interventional radiologist can draw on a variety of instruments at their disposal. These may include tools such as guidewires and catheters, needles, and stents. While there are many right ways to create or perform a procedure, the skill of an interventional radiologist lies in their ability to discern when not to use a particular tool, keeping in mind the safety of the patient and the limitations of the hardware. This chapter provides a brief overview of the imaging modalities and common tools used in interventional radiology.
