Abstract
This chapter describes the interaction between liver disease and pregnancy. It can be broadly separated into three parts: pregnancy related liver diseases, non-pregnancy related liver diseases and liver disease de novo in pregnancy. The specific pregnancy related liver diseases include intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), the spectrum of pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome and acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP). Recent updates in the field include the PITCHES trial regarding the use of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in ICP and the ASPRE study for the use of aspirin in pre-eclampsia.
