Information Literacy in a Post-Truth Era (ECIL 2021)

Abstract

In the post-truth era, where ambiguous information proliferates and social media facilitates its speedy dissemination, manipulation through mis/disinformation becomes widespread. A functioning democracy relies on well-informed citizens who are equipped with critical thinking, information literacy as well as news literacy skills which are necessary to sort true information/news from false. Preparation of an adequate news literacy training programme, on the other hand, requires an understanding of news consumption behaviour as well as the gaps in the skills of the target group. This study aims to investigate news consumption and sharing behaviour of university students in Turkey. Findings seem to be in line with global news consumption behaviours of young people and indicate a need for a well planned training programme which specifically addresses news verification techniques and methods.
