Abstract

Data information and governance establish the framework for securely storing, accessing, and disclosing health information. This framework demonstrates to regulators that an organization is using appropriate controls to protect patient information and simultaneously maximizing the data’s value for authorized purposes. Society is more concerned about patient privacy than ever. In response, many state governments have introduced new privacy protection laws, and being a good steward of health data means being accountable. Unauthorized access of patient information can result in more than just monetary penalties. News of data breaches often become headlines that damage the trust put in an organization. Losing trust may lower an organization’s revenue and damage its reputation. Because of that, an organization must have policies, processes, and training to operationalize how data is used safely and effectively. In some ways, health data is an organization’s most important asset.
