Abstract

The notion of the Mahler measure of a matrix grew out of the study of Salem numbers that appeared as Mahler measures of graphs. In the first part of this chapter, we look at some special cases of this construction of Salem numbers. We show that certain limit points of these Salem numbers are Pisot numbers, again giving just a very special case of a more general result. The second part of the chapter turns to an interlacing construction for Salem numbers, which historically grew from the graph construction but is considerably more general. Some special cases that are treated in this chapter are needed as a tool for use in the next chapter.
