Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Rheumatology Review

Abstract

Although many proceduralists are highly skilled at anatomic landmark-guided aspiration and injection needle procedures, the widespread availability of excellent and economical point-of-care ultrasound (US) units has revolutionized bedside US-guided (USG) needle procedures. USG procedures have an number of advantages in that US reveals relevant deep anatomy including subtle pockets of fluid, permits acquisition of this fluid for diagnosis, facilitates more accurate needle placement, reduces procedural pain, improves arthrocentesis success, permits complete decompression, facilitates such procedures as USG barbotage, lavage, and biopsy, improves therapeutic outcomes, promotes procedural safety, and may improve cost-effectiveness depending on the anatomic region and technique. This article reviews the contemporary role of USG procedures in the musculoskeletal clinic.
