Abstract

Functional assessment strategies may be used to augment the treatment of mental health disorders. Several treatments have been developed through the study of behavioral analysis and behavioral theories of mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety disorders, depression). Due to the high prevalence and burden of mental health disorders, providing informed treatment strategies is paramount. An overview of behavioral theories of prominent mental health disorders and behaviorally based treatments is presented. Behavioral functions, functional assessment methods, and the use of functional assessment to inform treatments of anxiety disorders and depression are discussed.
