Abstract
This chapter covers the evaluation of a thyroid nodule, including thyroid function tests, thyroid scintigraphy, and fine-needle aspiration. Each of the major thyroid cancers—papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic—is discussed. The technique of thyroidectomy and the most common postoperative complications of this procedure are described. In particular, the signs of superior and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury are detailed. A classic case of thyroid cancer is described and questions are provided for review.
