Abstract
This chapter discusses hyperglycemia as a presenting sign of diabetes mellitus. Hyperglycemia may occur less commonly during the stress of significant illness, with the use of high doses of glucocorticoids, or the use of certain other medications. Confirming hyperglycemia and investigating associated signs and symptoms that may indicate a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is critical to providing timely care. Based on presentation, recommendations for appropriate triage and management of children and adolescents with hyperglycemia are presented.
