Abstract
Today, major obstacles to community recycling include lack of effective incentivization and opportunity cost. We attempt to ameliorate this through agent-based modeling by identifying key incentives and relationships to be manipulated by policymakers to effectively inspire recycling behaviors. In our model, an agent’s choice to discard waste or recycle is influenced by social pressure as well as convenience. Therefore, based on the behavior of these agents, we draw inferences as to how recycling behavior manifests itself at the community level. As anticipated, the availability of recycling bins and their distribution are highly salient in determining recycling behavior.
