Abstract
The present chapter discusses the profile of the study areas and the socio-economic conditions of the sample households. The study area comprises five different agro-climatic regions of West Bengal like hill regions of Darjeeling district, foot-hill regions of Jalpaiguri district, drought: regions of Purulia district, coastal Sunderbans of South 24 Parganas and another coastal region of East Midnapore district.
